MEET THE LEAD PASTOR Omar Giritli serves as the Lead Pastor at Christ Fellowship in Miami, FL. He and his wife Ashley are joyfully married and they have two beautiful children, Camila and Mateo. He was born in Puerto Rico, but raised in Miami since age 7. He has been in ministry for over 15 years and served in different capacities such as Small Group Pastor, Campus Pastor and Director of Campuses. He is a Law School graduate from the University of Miami, member of the BAR, and holds a Master in Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Est. 1896 Over one hundred years old , this building is a magnificent four-story Neoclassical structure with elements of the Renaissance Revival, including symmetrically tripartite composed facades, projected pedimented porticos and a beautifully ornate cupola. One of the few historic landmarks of Miami, our beautiful church was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Our Tuesday gatherings are from 7:30pm to 9:30pm with music that is gospel-centered, a biblical teaching that will apply to your daily life, and Small Groups where we engage in more personal fellowship and Bible study. When people think of Christ Fellowship, many of them are reminded of Pastor Rick because of the indelible impact he had during his tenure as Lead Pastor. He taught God’s Word truthfully, passionately, and with conviction. Leading thousands of people to Christ, many members of our congregation first heard the gospel listening to Pastor Rick’s teachings. Dr. Blackwood was a devoted father and a loving husband—a giant of the faith we will never forget. "I LOVE YOU ALL. GOD BLESS, CHRIST FELLOWSHIP." Dr. Blackwood was a devoted father and a loving husband—a giant of the faith we will never forget. Pastor Rick's Life 1956 Born on November 2, 1956, Ricky Blackwood first heard about God as a teenager on his front porch when two evangelists came knocking on his door. They led him to receive the Lord as his Savior, and his life was forever changed. From that moment on, he developed a passion for evangelism. His calling for ministry came shortly after that. 1977 During his time in college, he met a young woman, who he deemed, “the most beautiful girl he had ever seen." Rick thought she was too good for him, but the Lord brought them together. Rick called their love story “a God thing.” Rick and Rhonda were happily married for almost 46 years. She was his constant encourager, his supportive partner and in his own words, “The sunshine of my life.” 1978 Together they had two daughters, Natalie & Rebekah. He was the proud PapPap of Autumn, Audrey, Arianna and Bailey. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, taking them on trips to the mall, to horseback riding lessons, and on dates to the American Girl Doll Store. 1981 He graduated from Baptist Bible College, Springfield, Missouri and had two Master’s degrees and three Doctoral degrees from Grace Theological Seminary, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Trinity International University. 1996 In 1996, Pastor Rick Blackwood moved to Miami and joined First Baptist Church of Perrine as the Lead Pastor. This wasn’t an easy move, and when all things seemed to be against him staying, he thought about Miami, its people, and how much this city needed the Lord. So he held on to his Bible and decided to preach the gospel against all odds. 2005 In May of 2005, after Perrine had become the Village of Palmetto Bay, Pastor Rick led the church to change its name to Christ Fellowship, with Christ at the forefront of their name and at the heart of the mission. On a restaurant napkin, a new strategy for reaching the city of Miami was born. He imagined it would be like a sprinkler system, with one main campus watering multiple locations across the county. He wanted to grow the church by pouring into all areas of Miami. Week after week, Pastor Rick would make it his goal to preach God’s word in a way that would reach everyone listening. He focused on message preparation, and he dedicated more than 25 hours for each weekend sermon. WATCH PAST MESSAGES 2008 Author of The Power of Multi-Sensory Preaching & Teaching , and teacher of many seminars like “Leading from the Pulpit,” Pastor Rick’s passion was to pass along preaching skills to other pastors that would empower them to lead church growth and revitalization from their own pulpits. Through the years, and through the multi-site model that Pastor Rick adopted, CF was able to multiply from a church of about 800 attendees to thousands of attendees at six local campuses made up of over 70 nationalities. In addition, they added multiple services in English and Spanish, with over 9,000 people watching online every week. He also led the expansion into South America and the Caribbean with 12 global campuses and a sister church in Ukraine. PURCHASE BOOK 2011 One night at 3am, Pastor Rick had an unexpected brush with death. After waking up with horrible chest pains, he realized he was having a heart attack. His wife quickly called paramedics, who were able to save his life by the grace of God. A testament to his faith, Pastor Rick didn’t feel fear in the moment, but excitement at the thought of finally meeting his Creator. 2016 As Christ Fellowship continued to grow, a minor pain sent Pastor Rick to the doctor. This small worry suddenly became an overwhelming problem as the doctor diagnosed him with stage 3 colon cancer. After battling through six months of hard chemotherapy, God’s grace lavished upon Pastor Rick once again and he was declared cancer-free. Even through his cancer treatment, Pastor Rick continued to preach at CF and lead the church. 2017 In the fall of 2017, Christ Fellowship held a service called “Code Blue Revival” at the Watsco Center. Open to the entire city, Pastor Rick cast a powerful vision to the church: Millions of people in Miami are spiritually dead, and it’s the church’s responsibility to preach the life-saving gospel far and wide. 2019 After serving as Christ Fellowship’s Lead Pastor for 23 years, Pastor Rick decided it was time to pass the baton. Through careful research and prayerful consideration, Pastor Rick felt led by God to choose Pastor Omar Giritli as his successor, calling him, “My Timothy—my son in the ministry.” Although Pastor Rick was officially retired, he continued to teach at Christ Fellowship alongside the new Lead Pastor, as well as teach college courses at various seminaries. Pastor Rick never hesitated to celebrate Pastor Omar and all that God was doing through him at CF. WATCH THE SERIES 2023 In the summer of 2023, just a few short months after Pastor Rick preached on Palm Sunday at Christ Fellowship, he received the news that his cancer had come back. The church quickly began to pray for Pastor Rick, and he remained hopeful in the face of yet another health battle. In honor of Father’s Day, Pastors Rick and Omar filmed a conversation in the hospital as Pastor Rick recounted his journey through fatherhood. WATCH THE MESSAGE Almost two months later, the doctors treating Pastor Rick informed him that they had exhausted all their treatment options. The chemotherapy he had to endure took too much of a toll on his body, and it was recommended that he transition to hospice care. Pastor Rick’s brothers and sisters in Christ continued to pray knowing that whatever God’s will was for Pastor Rick, it was good. Early in the morning on Friday, August 4, 2023, Pastor Rick went to be with the Lord. Pastor Rick is survived by his wife, Rhonda Blackwood, his brother Michael Blackwood, his two daughters, Natalie and Rebekah, and his four grandchildren. On August 8, 2023, Christ Fellowship held a funeral service in memory of Pastor Rick Blackwood at our Palmetto Bay Campus. In the company of his family, friends and thousands of church congregants both in-person and online, the service honored his life and legacy. The church worshiped God together with Pastor Rick’s favorite songs and listened to the many stories and remarks from the ones closest to him. The service closed with an encouraging message from Pastor Omar Giritli and a call to salvation—just as it was Pastor Rick’s desire to do. WATCH THE FUNERAL On August 13, 2023, Christ Fellowship celebrated Pastor Rick’s life at all their campuses during all their services. The church worshiped God together, heard from His Word and remembered Pastor Rick’s legacy. WATCH THE CELEBRATION SERVICE 2024 On August 4, 2024, one year after Pastor Rick’s passing, Lieutenant Governor of Florida, Jeanette Núñez, honored Pastor Rick by presenting his family with the new name of 168th Street, Pastor Rick Blackwood Street. Christ Fellowship celebrated with a special service as they remembered the great impact Pastor Rick had on the city of Miami and the world. WHAT TO EXPECT With locations all around Miami, there's a place for you here. We would love to see you this weekend! At Christ Fellowship, we know visiting a new church for the first time can be intimidating. We want to make sure you feel welcome, comfortable and loved when you visit us. Here are a few frequently asked questions: 1. WHO ARE WE? We are a church that loves Jesus, loves people, and loves our community. 2. WHEN AND WHERE? We have multiple campuses all around Miami-Dade County. Click here to select a location and view service times. 3. IS THERE A DRESS CODE? The dress code is very casual. There’s no need to come in a suit, tuxedo, or anything too fancy. Come as you are! Jeans and a t-shirt works fine. 4. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON MY FIRST VISIT? From the moment you first arrive, it’s our goal to make you feel at home. Someone from our Guest Services team will meet you at the entrance with a smile and ready to answer any questions you might have. From there, you can make your way to our CF Café for complimentary coffee, check your kids in, or head right into the worship service. Our services start right on time and are one hour and fifteen minutes long, so come early to get a great seat! 5. WHAT IS AVAILABLE FOR MY KIDS? We were hoping you would ask! We have a safe and fun environment for kids of all ages. Our CF Kids services are tailored for children birth to 5th grade. Our CF Students services include a live worship service and small group time for kids in middle school and high school. We even have reserved an infant room for children six months and younger to join you during the service. Parents tell us all the time that their kids love coming to Christ Fellowship each weekend! 6. WHAT IS THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE LIKE? Our experiences are meaningful, creative and spiritually engaging. Each experience kicks off with a time of live worship music - which is often a blend of live energetic rock and soul that has our guests standing. Folks tell us all the time that we are blessed with an amazing worship team – we agree. Then, one of our pastors shares a biblically-centered message that's always honest and challenging, empowering you to apply Jesus' words to your daily life. We like to end our teaching time with a few minutes of prayer. Then, we wrap up the experience with a few closing announcements and an opportunity to give back to God. 7. For over 104 years, we have been a church that has focused on helping our children grow in the knowledge and the love of God. And here is why it is critical that we spend a lot of time developing the leaders of tomorrow… NOW 3 YEAR PLAN We would like to see an expansion of three new campuses . We believe that what our communities need more than anything are Christ centered churches where the glorious gospel is proclaimed every week. These campuses will focus on their own specific communities by serving them, meeting their needs, and bringing them the message of hope. Communities like Miami Lakes, Tamiami, or Miami Shores. We would love to see our first full out Spanish campus in Hialeah . Having Spanish services positions us to be able to start a full out Spanish campus. Hialeah is the city with the highest percentage of a Hispanic population in the entire nation. 2025 The weekend of January 9 was a special one because we shared with you our Vision for the church and our plans for the next 1, 3 and 5 years. 5 YEAR ACC OMPLISHME NTS: We’ve been able to accomplish many things with our three primary focuses for Christ Fellowship: CHRIST FELLOWSHIP ACADEMY : CFA has been a ministry of the church for nearly 50 years and many families have been led to follow Jesus through the leadership of our teachers and staff. MOBILE UNIT : Our current bus was bought in 2013 and throughout the years we have served 6,149 people, providing 18,280 different services with a value of $2,229,255 .
