Does God Really Hear Our Prayers?

Everyone loves a fresh start: a new year, a new job, a new city, a new relationship. Sometimes those changes are gifts from God, but they cannot fix what is broken inside us. You can change your address and keep your anger. You can change relationships and carry the same insecurity. You can make more money and still be ruled by greed.

That is the tension in Daniel 9. Daniel is an elderly man living in Babylonian exile because God’s people had rebelled against Him. Then Daniel reads Jeremiah and realizes the seventy years of exile are almost over. So what does he do?

He prays.

Read Your Bible and Let It Move You

Daniel 9:2 says Daniel “perceived in the books” how long the exile would last. He was reading Scripture carefully, and what he read deeply moved him.

That is what God’s Word is meant to do. It exposes sin, redirects our hearts, and calls us to respond. A hurricane warning is not just interesting information. If you believe the source, you prepare. Daniel believed God’s Word, and it drove him to his knees.

The question is not only whether you read your Bible, but whether you obey it.

Confess All Your Sins

Daniel does not begin his prayer by asking for comfort or blessing. Rather, he confesses sin. In Daniel 9:5, he says, “We have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled.” He does not minimize, excuse, or rename it.

We often do. Anger becomes “passion.” Greed becomes “ambition.” Gossip becomes “concern.” Pride becomes “high standards.” But you cannot repent of a sin you are committed to renaming.

Scripture is like an MRI. It goes beneath the surface, past the image we present, and shows what is really happening. God exposes what is broken so He can heal what we have been hiding.

Remember the Lord is Merciful

Daniel 9:18 says, “We do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy.” Daniel’s confidence is not in his record, but in God’s character.

Some people come to God with a spiritual resume, while others avoid Him because they feel ashamed. Both miss the point. God does not invite us near because we performed well, but because He is merciful.

Like a frightened child calling for a parent in the night, we cry out because of who He is.

God’s Answers Are Bigger than Your Questions

Before Daniel even finishes praying, God sends the angel Gabriel with an answer. Daniel prayed about the end of a seventy-year exile, but God revealed a greater plan: the coming Messiah who would atone for sin and bring everlasting righteousness.

God’s answer was miles bigger than Daniel’s question.

The Measure of God's Love

Daniel 9 foretells that the Messiah would be “cut off.” Jesus fulfilled that through the Cross, bearing our sin and rising again in victory.

The measure of God’s love is not whether He has fixed your situation yet, it is Christ crucified and risen for you.

You do not just need a “fresh start.” You need a Savior.
