When the Worst Actually Happens

What's Going to Happen in the End Times?

Have you ever been glued to a TV show, anticipating the next scene, when all of a sudden the episode ends on a cliffhanger.

Not knowing how the story ends is the worst.

Daniel 7 reminds us that the future is not only known by God, but secured by God, and that truth gives peace to the people of God even when history feels unstable.

Daniel’s Frightening Vision

The prophet Daniel received a disturbing dream during the reign of Belshazzar, king of Babylon, in which he saw four great beasts rising from a stormy sea. The first was like a lion with eagle’s wings, the second like a bear with ribs in its mouth, the third like a leopard with four heads, and the fourth was terrifying, powerful, and unlike the others, with iron teeth, bronze claws, and ten horns (Daniel 7:3-8).

Daniel was alarmed by what he saw, but the vision was not given to drive him into despair; it was given to reveal that earthly kingdoms rise and fall under the sovereign rule of God. These beasts represent powerful empires, commonly understood as Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome, each fierce in its day, yet each unable to last forever.

The Last Empire and the One Who Will Lead It

The fourth beast receives special attention because it points beyond ancient Rome to a final world empire still to come. From its ten horns, a smaller horn rises, displacing three others, speaking arrogant words, and exercising personal authority. This figure is the antichrist.

When Daniel’s vision is read alongside Matthew 24 and 2 Thessalonians 2, the picture becomes sobering. The antichrist will rise to global influence, lead a coalition of nations, speak blasphemies against God, and enter a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, where he will proclaim himself to be God.

This is why the temple mount matters prophetically. Though the temple was destroyed in A.D. 70 and a mosque now occupies that area, Scripture indicates that a future temple will exist, setting the stage for these events.

Three and a Half Years of Darkness

Daniel is told that this ruler will be given authority for “a time, times, and half a time,” understood as three and a half years. During that period, he will wage war against the saints, wear them down, and appear to prevail.

This is not an easy truth, because Scripture does not promise that God’s people will avoid all suffering in the last days. However, it does promise that the darkness has a limit, and that limit is set by God himself.

The Ancient of Days Takes His Seat

When all hope seems lost, Daniel’s vision turns from terror to glory. He sees the Ancient of Days seated in judgment, radiant in holiness, with thousands upon thousands before Him and the books opened.

Then one like a Son of Man comes with the clouds of heaven and receives dominion, glory, and an everlasting kingdom. This is Christ, whose reign will never pass away.

Revelation 19 shows the fulfillment: Jesus returns as King of kings and Lord of lords, defeats the beast, and establishes his rule forever.

What This Means for the Anxious Soul

The future is not chaos to God; it is a story He has already written. The darkness is real, but temporary, and the final word belongs to Christ.

Because the future is secured in Him, the child of God can live with peace today.
