How to Stand Firm When the Current of This World Pulls You Under
Pastor Omar Giritli

Anyone who has spent time in the ocean knows how quickly the water can change. One moment you feel steady. The next, the current shifts, and you realize you are being pulled farther than you intended to go.
Sin often works the same way.
The pull does not always feel dangerous at first. It may show up as a relationship you know is unhealthy, a private habit no one sees, a bitterness you keep feeding, a compromise at work, the love of money, pornography, or old friendships that keep pulling you backward. At first, it feels manageable. Then one day you look up and wonder how you drifted so far.
What We Can Learn from Daniel’s Story
Daniel 1 gives us a powerful picture of this. Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were young men taken from Judah into Babylon. Their homeland had fallen, the holy temple had been looted, and everything familiar to them was gone.
First, their names were changed. Daniel meant “God is my Judge.” Hananiah meant “Beloved of the Lord.” Mishael meant “Who is as God?” Azariah meant “The Lord is my help.” Their names reminded them who they were and who they belonged to. Babylon replaced those names with names tied to false gods.
Second, their education was changed. They were taught the language, literature, and worldview of Babylon.
Third, their lifestyle was targeted. They were offered the king’s food and wine, likely connected to idol worship and the indulgent culture of Babylonian feasting.
That is still how the world works! It rarely begins by asking you to abandon God all at once; it tries to reshape your identity, retrain your thinking, and normalize a way of living that slowly pulls you from Him.
How Daniel Resolved
As Daniel saw what was happening, he “resolved that he would not defile himself,” (Daniel 1:8)
That word “resolved” holds a ton of meaning, as it shows that Daniel did not wait until the pressure was strongest to decide what he believed. He made a settled decision beforehand. He knew who he was, and he knew where the line had to be drawn.
We need that same kind of resolve. Not vague intentions or “I’ll try to do better,” but a real decision to honor God before temptation has the chance to negotiate.
We’re Stronger Together
One of the best parts of this story is that Daniel did not have to stand alone. When he asked for a test, he included his friends and they resisted together.
Do you have people in your circle who are as resolved to obey the Lord? When the current of the world gets strong, will they help you stand? Real Christian community is encouragement and accountability; someone grabbing your arm when you are drifting and saying, “Not that way.”
God Honors Those Who Honor Him
Daniel 1 says God gave Daniel favor and compassion. By the end of the chapter, Daniel and his friends were found to be ten times wiser than the others in Babylon.
While the current of sin is strong, God’s grace is stronger.
So, ask yourself: “Is there resolve in me? And who is standing with me?”
